Fun for families, history buffs, tree lovers, and wanna-be detectivesMay 16th is Arbor Day in Maplewood and there's a tree history mystery brewing. The Case of the Missing Elm Grove—Who (or What) Done It? Come try to solve the mystery. Start at the Golfview Picnic Shelter and walk the trail (about 1/3 mile) to the location of the long-gone grove. Along the way, gather clues, learn about trees, and discover the story of Maplewood's historic tree groves. At the old grove site participate in a brief ceremony at 11:30 to rededicate the Memory Grove plaque.Stay after the ceremony to learn how to plant a disease-resistant elm, ask a naturalist your tree questions, chat with members from the Historical Society, or enjoy the park and trail on your own. Chester the cat and Harold the dog are the best of pals. But, one dark and stormy night,their family comes home with a very strange baby rabbit who has sharp fangs and sleeps all day. Meanwhile, all the vegetables in the house are drained of their color and turn white. Could this possibly be a coincidence, or could Chester and Harold be facing Bunnicula the Vampire? Students will build self-confidence, explore creating a character, and learn simple staging as they rehearse a re-enactment of this quirky story narrated by our Teaching Artist. A final presentation for family and friends will take place on the last day of this workshop series. Each participant will receive a voucher good for 1 free child and 1 free adult ticket to the Lyric Arts Main Street Stage production of “Bunnicula” (subject to availability).

Goodbye to Winter Constellations

    Staring Lake ObservatoryLet's say goodbye to the winter constellations and say hello to the spring shiners, where Jupiter is featured.
    Astronomer: Mike Lynch from WCCO radio.
    If it is clear, we'll have the roof open and the telescope pointed up. Our astronomer will explain what you are seeing and answer questions.
    If it is cloudy, we'll use the large screen LCD inside the center to learn how to find some of the same highlights from our own backyards. All events are rain or shine. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Please dress for the weather.
    Cost: $7 per person

    The city of Minnetonka offers a number of events throughout the summer at the outdoor amphitheater on the civic center campus, 14600 Minnetonka Boulevard, Minnetonka.
    • The Music in the Park series takes place Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m., starting in early June, with all concerts taking place at the outdoor amphitheater at the Minnetonka Civic Center Campus, 14600 Minnetonka Boulevard, Minnetonka.
